Pride Guide 2007 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE C-7

Counselors and supplies needed for Camp Sunrise

by Katie McKee

Columbus Camp Sunrise, a camp for HIV-impacted youth throughout Ohio, needs your help. This year's week-long camp will take place August 12-18, and Camp Sunrise is looking for donations of supplies. Anything you already have or are willing to purchase and can donate means that Camp Sunrise will have to spend less money on incidentals, and more money on making additional slots available for prospective campers.

Last year, 120 youth were accepted into the program, the highest number yet. This year, the goal is to increase that number to 130.

Some of the items that will help in planning for the week-long camp are gift cards to Michaels, Target, Giant Eagle or Kroger. Or, you or your company may sponsor an activity at camp, such as a pizza party, pool party, talent show or s'mores night. contact kmckee@atfgc.org_or 216-432-9544.

Contact Camp Sunrise program manager Katie McKee at the AIDS Taskforce of Cleveland, 216-432-9544 or kmckee@atfgc.org, or on her cell phone, 216-269-3782.

Camp Sunrise is also recruiting volunteer counselors for the week of camp. Staff will be required to participate in a pre-camp training on August 10 and 11. Camp counselors must be 21 years of age at the time of camp. Counselors work in groups of three or four to oversee a cabin of 8 to 10 young people, assisting them with traditional camp activities like horseback riding, archery, canoeing, drama and arts and crafts.

The youth attending Camp Sunrise's summer camp are between the ages of six and 17 and are affected by HIV and AIDS, meaning that they themselves are HIV-positive or are living with or grieving the loss of a loved one to the disease.

Lodging and food are provided for the

entire week for volunteer camp counselors, and new counselors will be working under the guidance of veteran counselors and a highly skilled camp director. All volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to and from camp. Volunteers must be able to commit to the staff training and the entire week of camp. Volunteers must fill out an application, complete an interview, and undergo FBI and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation fingerprint screenings at the time of the interview.

More information and camp counselor applications are available on the website at www.sunrisekids.org. Deadline for applications is June 30; however, Camp Sunrise is currently interviewing for these positions. Apply as soon as possible.

Katie McKee is the program manager for Camp Sunrise.
